Children’s Minister Job Description

Mount Carmel Baptist Church:

Our Mission Statement is:  Mount Carmel Baptist church exists to connect people every day to life-changing encounters with Jesus.  We believe in providing the next generation with God encounters that will change their life and impact their world.  Our Children’s Ministry is dedicated to providing God encounters for each child and parent in the Cabot Public School system and equipping families to take Jesus into their homes and the community.

Position Details:

Report to:  Executive Pastor

Primary Expectations:

The Children’s Minister is expected to minister to families and provide spiritual training for children from first grade through fourth grade by planning a comprehensive program for children’s education, and spiritual training for children and their parents.  The Children’s Minister should provide leadership to the children’s ministry staff and volunteers, encouragement for  parents, and a safe place where their children can be nurtured, loved, and taught Biblical principles as they grow up to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. 

The Children’s Minister is expected to work with the Children’s Ministry Team to develop programs and procedures.  He is expected to maintain unity with the church staff, and build relationships in the church, Cabot Public Schools, day care, and the community.  

Principle Functions:

The Children’s Minister oversees the children’s ministry by providing Christian training, nurturing, mentoring, and caring for school-age children and their parents, as well as leadership for the workers and volunteers.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures that all classrooms, 1st through 4th grade, use curriculum that teaches the beliefs of the Baptist Faith and Message adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention June 2000, and that all teachers abide by such teaching in the classrooms.
  2. Recruits volunteers and teachers for all areas of children’s ministry for 1st –  4th grades.
  3. Holds regular quarterly teacher and volunteer trainings to include instruction in teaching methods/techniques, equipment use, and safety standards.
  4. Develops spiritual markers for 1st – 4th grades, along with a program for leading children to knowledge of salvation and develop them to grow in Christian maturity.
  5. Builds solid nurturing relationships and communicates with the children and parents.
  6. Develops annual calendar of events and activities, including dates and costs, to present to parents. 
  7. Organizes events and age group activities and programs to include planning, marketing, administration, education, communication, and management of events such as:  Wednesday night activities, summer camp, drama activities, retreats, music, fellowships, mission activities, and vacation bible school, etc.
  8. Maintains a presence and liaison with the Cabot Public School’s elementary and middle schools, and the church’s day care, with the goal of attracting unchurched children to be a part of our church’s Sunday School program.
  9. Maintains a presence and liaison with children’s charitable and non-profit organizations in the community such as CASA, the CALL, and Open Arms Shelter, etc.
  10. Works with Children’s Ministry Team to develop a plan to refresh the children’s space, Sunday School rooms, and gym, and to develop policies and procedures, programs and activities to meet the needs of our children and their families.  Schedules and meets at least quarterly with Children’s Ministry Team.
  11. Resolves any necessary changes to facilities or procedures, to ensure an excellent level of safety and security for all children and staff, and maintains a safe and appropriate environment for children. 
  1. Communicates with Executive Pastor about needs and concerns arising with paid and volunteer workers (for example: training needs, prayer needs, logistical needs like room cleaning/extra rooms needed, particular scheduling challenges or difficulty maintaining workers, concern for safety, etc.)
  1. Prepares an annual children’s ministry budget, and once approved, administers the budget in consultation with the Executive Pastor and Finance Team.
  2. Sets an example for MCBC congregation by attending a minimum of one Sunday morning worship service each week, when not leading services.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, prefer seminary degree.
  • 3-5 years student ministry-related experience.
