Position Overview: The Senior Pastor is a spiritual leader who plays a pivotal role in the life of Park Hill Baptist Church. He is called to shepherd Park Hill Baptist Church through leading the church staff and the congregation to accomplish her mission and ministry.

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be, not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away (1 Peter 5:2-4).

Responsibilities:

  1. Preaching and Teaching:
    • Proclaim the Gospel: The Senior Pastor is called to faithfully preach and teach the Word of God, emphasizing salvation through Jesus Christ.
    • Biblical Instruction: Provide sound biblical teaching during worship services, Bible studies, and other gatherings.
  2. Pastoral Care:
    • Shepherding: Offer spiritual guidance, counseling, and support to congregants during life’s joys and challenges, including sharing the gospel with those who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ.
    • Visitation: Visit the sick, homebound, and those in need, demonstrating compassion and empathy.
  3. Leadership and Administration:
    • Vision Casting: Collaborate with church leadership to cast a compelling vision for the congregation’s growth and impact.
    • Supervision: Responsible for the general supervision of church staff, including regular staff meetings, encouragement, and engagement, if needed, to address grievances that could lead to disciplinary action or termination. Works with the Executive Pastor and Personnel Committee to discern and facilitate any changes in the Pastoral Staff Policy Manual, staff reorganization, new staff positions, and/or the calling of church staff for congregational approval.
    • Administrative Duties: Works with the Executive Pastor to manage church operations, including budgeting, planning, and organizational development. Moderates quarterly and special-called business meetings (or appoints a moderator as needed). Oversee compliance with church’s Constitution and Bylaws and the Staff Policy Manual for all staff. Provide annual evaluation for direct reports and a self-evaluation to the Personnel Committee.
    • Communication: Provide weekly communication to the church to lift up & encourage members, promote church wide programs, activities and events etc. (e.g. e-news, Chimes)
  4. Community Engagement:
    • Outreach: Engage with the local community, building relationships and sharing Christ’s love.
    • Collaboration: Cooperate with other churches, denominational bodies, and community organizations as appropriate.
  5. Worship and Discipleship:
    • Worship Leadership: Works with the Worship Pastor to coordinate the worship ministries of the church, including the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
    • Discipleship: Encourage spiritual growth through discipleship programs, small groups, and mentoring. Be engaged with New Member/Prospect Orientation.
  6. Relationships:
    • Serves at the pleasure of the church with oversight from the Personnel Committee.
    • Serves as direct supervisor of the Executive Pastor, the Worship Pastor, and any other staff ministers he prefers to supervise.
    • Serves as primary staff liaison to the Deacons and the Personnel Committee (and is ex officio on all committees, engaged at whatever level he chooses).
    • Denominational Organizations – works on denominational assignments, committees as time allows and maintains good relationships with the association, state and Southern Baptist convention.
  7. Qualifications:
    • Calling and Walk: A clear sense of God’s calling to pastoral ministry. Maintain and grow personal walk with Jesus.
    • Learner: Strives to be a lifelong learner through reading, continuing education, conferences.
    • Education: Possess a relevant theological degree (e.g., PHD, DMin, M.Div.).
    • Experience: Previous pastoral experience required.
    • Doctrinal Alignment: Adhere to Southern Baptist Faith and Message.
